The BBC’s Panorama program today reports on the devastating effects a cyber attack can have on small and medium sized businesses.

They quote the case of KNP – a Northamptonshire transport company – which was the victim of a ransomware attack that ultimately caused the company to close after 158 years in business, with the loss of 700 jobs.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is the Government’s agency responsible for cyber security with a goal “to make the UK the safest place to live and work online”. Its CEO, Richard Horne, is quoted as saying “we need organisations to take steps to secure their systems, to secure their businesses”.

Cyber Essentials is the NCSC’s cyber security certification scheme to help organisations, regardless of size, improve their cyber resilience through the effective implementation of five key technical controls. These controls provide protection from the majority of common cyber attacks. Cyber Essentials certified organisations are 92% less likely to make a claim on their cyber insurance than those without it.
